The future of the member forum

Post by Stefan Avlijas - HQ » Wed Apr 04, 2018 2:59 pm

When the idea was first initiated to create the BCGEU Member Discussion Forum, the goal was to create a space for members to connect with each other across a wide spectrum of topics. The concept was to provide an online forum for members to share ideas and communicate with one another between meetings and conventions. We want to thank you for signing up to be part of the conversation on the forum.

We are getting in touch today to give you an update about the future of the member discussion forum.

The BCGEU Convention resolution that created the pilot project member discussion forum mandated that the Provincial Executive evaluate its success after a six month period, and decide on how to proceed next.

Throughout the pilot project, the member discussion forum faced the fundamental challenge that all online community platforms face when they just start: how to get people to participate.

As staff we attempted to overcome this challenge by posting discussion content on the forum, information about BCGEU campaigns, hosting a Question and Answer event on the forum with president Stephanie Smith, and encouraging members to sign on to the forum via email and social media.

An evaluation report, including usage statistics for the member discussion forum, was presented to the Provincial Executive at their February meeting. Based on this information, the Provincial Executive has decided to discontinue the member forum. We will be shutting down the member forum in the coming days.

In the spirit of keeping the conversation open, we wanted to invite any feedback that you would like to share with the union about the forum. We have prepared a four question survey about your user experience of the forum to help improve our communications moving forward. Click here to fill it out the member forum survey:

As the main administrators of the forum since its initial roll-out, we want to thank you participating in this platform. It was a valuable exercise for the union to try to facilitate increased interactions between members, and we learned from the experience. BCGEU remains committed to providing members with the communications tools they need.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts,

In Solidarity,
Stefan, Rodrigo, Erin, and Aaron
